On Friday, July 24, HCA proudly hosted our 3rd Annual ADA Celebration at Otsiningo Park, bringing together individuals with disabilities, families, caregivers, community organizations, volunteers, and community members to celebrate the 36th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
Signed into law on July 26, 1990, the ADA is landmark civil rights legislation that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities and helps ensure equal opportunities in employment, education, transportation, public accommodations, and community life. While the ADA has made tremendous progress possible over the past 36 years, celebrations like this remind us that creating truly inclusive communities is an ongoing effort.
Throughout the afternoon, attendees enjoyed a variety of free activities, games, crafts, food, and opportunities to connect with local organizations that provide valuable programs, services, and resources throughout our community. Children and adults alike participated in face painting, mural painting, scavenger hunts, lawn games, mini golf, axe throwing, and many other engaging activities while enjoying hot dogs, popcorn, and homemade lemonade.
A special highlight of the event was the involvement of HCA’s Self-Advocacy Committee, whose members helped welcome guests and shared the importance of self-advocacy. Their leadership served as a meaningful reminder that every individual deserves to have a voice, make their own choices, and be empowered to advocate for themselves and others.
This celebration would not have been possible without the support of our incredible community partners, volunteers, sponsors, and everyone who attended. Your participation helped make the day a true celebration of inclusion, acceptance, and the abilities that make our community stronger.
